Before proceeding to a discussion of how to get rid of pride, first we will deal with this concept itself. This word usually means exorbitant pride, arrogance, selfishness, arrogance, etc. Everyone roughly knows what pride is, but rarely does anyone recognize it in themselves, and if they notice, they do not see any danger in it and, moreover, are not going to fight it. But sooner or later it will make itself felt and bear its terrible fruits.

How to get rid of pride: Orthodoxy, Catholicism

Pride in Orthodoxy is included in the eight sinful passions along with gluttony, fornication, greed, anger, sadness, despondency and vanity.

In Catholicism, pride is included in the seven main sinful passions along with gluttony, fornication, greed, anger, despondency and envy.

Before giving an answer to the question of how to get rid of the sin of pride, it should be noted that it is not at all the same thing. Pride is, in general, the most common property of any sinner. We all fall into the same from time to time - this is the great degree when this sinful passion turns into a dominant characteristic of the personality and fills it. These people usually do not hear anyone, they say about such people: "There is a lot of pride, but little intelligence."

islam about pride

Pride is when a person boasts of his achievements before the Creator, forgetting that it was from Him that he received them. This disgusting quality makes a person too arrogant, he begins to believe that he himself can achieve everything without the help of God, and therefore he never thanks God for everything he has.

How to get rid of pride? Islam, by the way, is also of the opinion that pride is a great sin, which causes a number of other sins.

According to the Qur'an, a genie named Iblis refused to obey Allah's order and prostrate to Adam. The jinn said that he was better than a man because he was made of fire and not clay. After that, he was cast down from heaven and swore to lead believers astray.

How to recognize the sin of pride? How to get rid of it?

Pride grows on the soil of well-being, and not when everything is bad. In euphoria, it is almost impossible to notice. But when it grows, it will be very difficult to stop it. She plunges a person into the illusion of her greatness and then suddenly throws him into the abyss. Therefore, it is better to notice it earlier, recognize it and, accordingly, begin an uncompromising struggle with it. Let's pay attention to the signs of its manifestation.

An indication of pride

  • Frequent resentment and intolerance towards other people, or rather their imperfection.
  • Constant blaming other people for their life problems.
  • Uncontrolled irritability and disrespect for other people.
  • Constant thoughts about one's own greatness and uniqueness, and therefore superiority over others.
  • The need for someone to constantly admire and praise you.
  • Absolute intolerance of criticism and unwillingness to correct their shortcomings.
  • Inability to ask for forgiveness.
  • Full confidence in their infallibility; the desire to argue and prove their merits.
  • Insubordination and stubbornness, which lies in the fact that a person cannot adequately and calmly accept the lessons of fate.

When pathos grows, the joy in the heart fades, dissatisfaction and discontent come to replace it. Only now some people, noticing in themselves all these negative signs of pride, begin to resist, while others become its victims.

Pride can be dealt with until it has grown to a gigantic size, figuratively speaking, has not taken power over the soul and mind. And we urgently need to get down to business, but how to deal with pride?

Fighting methods

  1. No matter how high your achievements, you should try to be interested in people who have achieved more, who should be respected and learned from them.
  2. Learn humility, realize the greatness and infinite potential of every human soul. Accept your insignificance before God - the creator of all life on earth and in heaven.
  3. Don't take all credits and accomplishments for yourself. Always thank the Lord for everything good and bad that happens to you, for various trials and lessons. The feeling of gratitude is always more pleasant to experience than the feeling of contempt for others.
  4. Find a person who is adequate, honest and good, so that he constructively expresses his opinion about you, all the shortcomings noticed need to be worked out and eradicated. And this is the best cure for pride.
  5. One should pass on one's best experience to people, try to help them disinterestedly with love. The manifestation of true love will surely cleanse the heart of pride. Those who do not start sharing their positive experiences with others in time will only increase the growth of pride and pseudo-greatness.
  6. Try to be sincere and first of all to yourself. Look for kindness in yourself so that there is an opportunity not to accumulate resentment in yourself, but to find strength and courage in yourself to ask for forgiveness from those whom we have offended and learn to admit our mistakes.

self-deprecation

Many are interested in another interesting question - how to get rid of pride and two extreme points, one concept implies high self-esteem, the other - underestimated. Let's talk about her a little.

If we already know about pride, then let's dwell a little on such a property as self-abasement, which is based on incorrect self-esteem and negative self-analysis. A person begins to belittle himself and his dignity in comparison with other people. He may not like his appearance and qualities, he constantly criticizes himself, they say, "I'm not handsome", "I'm fat", "I'm a slob", "I'm a complete fool", etc.

gun

Self-deprecation, like pride, can be used as a tool to influence how others evaluate and perceive you, so as not to get a painful blow to your self-esteem.

In a situation of self-humiliation, a person himself is the first to criticize, scold and reproach himself, thereby he forestalls possible negative reactions to him from others. Such people really believe that they are worse than others. Shyness also shows a developed inferiority complex in a person.

Causes of self-deprecation

Where does it come from? Usually it can be some negative experience from early childhood, associated with the inability to evaluate oneself and others.

Self-deprecation becomes an inadequate way to protect yourself from potential emotional threats. It can be used as a mask that a person puts on himself in adulthood to hide behind it.

Self-deprecation, as a rule, really appears from early childhood, often this is due to the inability of the child to meet all the high standards and expectations of the parents, especially if the parents are some outstanding people. They expect that their child must necessarily correspond to their ideals, possess talents and ambitious aspirations.

Mask of impotence

But the child does not reach the bar set by the parents, then he blames himself, considers himself mediocre, wrong self-esteem comes to his mind, because the parents are unhappy with him.

When a child grows up, that's when the fear appears that he can never be as good as many people around him, that they can't like him, so success, happiness and love will never come to him. He begins to openly declare that he is a loser. A deep internal conflict is brewing and a chain of complexes is formed that hide under a mask that means "do not pay any attention to me" and "do not expect anything special from me." He is not used to praise and does not accept it, because he does not believe in himself.

Vanity

In parallel, another question arises - how to get rid of pride and vanity. And it's all - the links of one chain. Where there is pride, there is vanity. The meaning of this concept is that a person constantly wants to look better than he really is, he feels a constant need to confirm his superiority, which means that he surrounds himself with flattering friends.

Related concepts of vanity also include pride, pride, arrogance, arrogance and "star fever". A vain person is only interested in his person.

Vanity is like a drug, without which, addicted to it, you can no longer live. Yes, and envy immediately attaches itself nearby, and they go hand in hand. Since a vain person does not tolerate any competition, if someone is ahead of him, black envy begins to gnaw at him.

Perishable glory

As mentioned above, vanity, along with pride, is included in the eight sinful passions in Orthodoxy.

I would like to add to everything that vanity is when a person constantly strives for vain, that is, vain and empty glory. The word "vain", in turn, means "soon and perishable."

Position, high post, fame - things on earth are short-lived and unreliable. Any earthly glory is ashes and dust, simply nothing compared to the glory that the Lord has prepared for His loving children.

Arrogance

Now we need to talk about how to get rid of pride and arrogance. You need to find out right away, then it will be easier to understand and cope with this passion. Arrogance is self-exaltation, arrogance and contempt for another person.

Summing up the discussion of how to get rid of pride, arrogance and the like, it should be noted that the fight against them is possible only after a person takes his behavior and words under strict control, starts doing good deeds, takes care of himself as much as possible. surrounding people and not expect gratitude and payment for this.

We must try to get rid of the thought of our own significance, specialness and greatness. Look at yourself from the outside, listen to what you say, what you think, how you behave, put yourself in the place of others.

Pride, arrogance and vanity will prevent a person from living an independent and fulfilling life. And before they destroy you, start fighting them. Only then will you be able to rejoice and live in peace with yourself and with the world around you. And you will no longer want to blame anyone for your sins, and there will be a desire to thank the Lord for everything.

The world will shine with different colors, only then a person can comprehend the main thing: the meaning of life is LOVE. And only for her he should strive.

The proud man is rarely a grateful person: he is always convinced that he receives less than he deserves.

Living someone else's life. Psychotherapeutic story. One beautiful summer a flower grew in the field. Maybe a biologist will say what it's called, but I don't know. Common wild flower. It had white leaves, and some whitish squiggles protruded from its core. On a rather thick stem, under the leaves, there was some kind of thickening, maybe there his main vitality accumulated, or maybe seeds, I won’t tell you either, because the story in general is not about that. It did not grow in the depths of the field, but on the outskirts, where there was a Temple with a garden across the road, and our flower could see what flowers were growing in that garden. Once, when he was just starting to grow up, he was still very small, he could not even be called a flower, he heard two people walking along the road and admired the roses that grew in the garden. The flower thought, “Oh! I’m probably also a rose, I’ll grow up, and they will also admire me. ” Several days have passed since that incident, and now our flower has begun to bloom. He was so gentle, innocent, pure, exuded such a wonderful delicate aroma that all the bees gathered to him for nectar. He blossomed and saw those same roses in the garden. He was fascinated by them, they are so tall, bright, and stand so proudly in the garden, you will not meet such people in the whole field! But the bees don't fly to them. “And what do they understand bees, they are probably just not allowed into the garden. But nothing, thought the flower. This is how the life of the flower went. He looked at the roses in the garden, watched how they were being watered and was angry at his fate because only the rain was watering him, and although, in principle, the rain was enough for him, he thought, since the roses are being watered, then it must be necessary to become even more beautiful. He watched the roses toil in the daytime from the sun and also toiled, sighing and groaning, although he himself, in his soul, really liked it when it shines on him and warms him with its warmth, such bliss ran through the stem from this, but he himself did not confessed. He studied the manners, tastes and desires of roses and already felt himself one of them, but he considered himself a rose that fate had cheated, because he grows in a field, not in a garden. Now, if he grew up in a garden, then he would be the best of roses, and all the roses would envy him and take an example from him. Maybe even then he would openly rejoice in the sun, and these roses would not hide from the sun like a bore, but also looking at him, rejoiced, and in general, he, of course, would change a lot in the life of roses. This is how the days of our flower passed day by day in plans and dreams about life with roses. Sometimes, believing himself to be a rose, he imagined that he could not be compared with any of the wildflowers that lived next door to him. He looked at them and thought, “Oh God! How simple they are! Just look, they have so few leaves, they are not tall, bees constantly sit on them. But at times, he envied these wildflowers that they are in their place and live happily for themselves, enjoy the sun, expose their leaves to the rain, laugh when they are tickled by bees and generously share pollen with them, and nothing worries them. They are happy flowers. And then one day, when his days were already running out and the autumn breeze blew, he heard the steps of people. “Here is my chance!” thought the flower. “Now they will notice me, they will notice that I am a rose and they will definitely take it and transplant it into the garden. Oh, how they will be surprised to see me among these wildflowers. He was all stretched out, straightened up, filled with juices, his curls began to emit that same wonderful delicate aroma that he exuded when he first blossomed, and now he was waiting in all his glory for people to notice him and take him to that garden, to the roses. And they really noticed him, one person sat down to him, breathed in his wonderful aroma and sincerely admired him: “Just look at what a wonderful field flower, what a delicate aroma it has. You know, I always admire wild flowers, each of them is wonderful in its own way, it can never be compared with these half-living roses, which you have to feed and spray all the time with all kinds of chemicals, which you can’t even smell afterwards. Just look at the harmony in the field, not a single gardener will make such beauty in the garden. Our flower, which was noticed, was in a daze. "So! So I'm not a rose. So all my life I didn’t allow myself to smell in vain, I hid from the sun and scolded the rain, instead of enjoying life like the rest of the flowers. All my life I have striven to become what I have never been in my life, and forbade myself to be who I really am ?! ”, the flower wept bitterly. The next day, our flower finally noticed the sun, noticed how much he likes it, put his leaves to him, absorbed the fresh breeze, let the bees in, and for the first time in his life he was pollinated and felt happy that now he will have seeds , and next year new, unique, wonderful, field flowers will grow.
